Anne Swaim will discuss how owls, hawks and other raptors have long adapted to living in the suburban/rural landscapes of the Hudson Valley. Some can live in city parks. Find out what species are here, how might we see and hear them, and how can we help protect them.

Anne Swaim is Executive Director of Saw Mill River Audubon, a Westchester County chapter of Audubon
that offers free birding field trips, school and community programs, and maintains eight protected sanctuaries in northern Westchester.

Raj Pande will discuss the creation of landscape gardens, planning, design, site conditions, budgeting and scheduling. He will examine the aesthetics of gardens as an art form, garden purpose, style, location, form, texture, color, and plant selection, keeping in mind ongoing maintenance requirements. This presentation strives to inspire home gardeners to manage their gardens in a planned and cost-efficient process to achieve their desired vision.

Raj Pande is a Master Gardener Volunteer with CCE. He enjoys creating and maintaining landscape gardens. Through several years renovating his landscape and experimenting with his gardens, Raj discovered the joy of garden design.

Winter Injury: how dead is it?

Speaker: Hillary Jufer

Hillary Jufer will discuss injury to evergreen, deciduous trees and shrubs caused by cold temperatures, winter weather, animals, and deicing salts. She will emphasize problems that Westchester County residents have reported in recent years. Management options to reduce these injuries will also be addressed.

Hillary Jufer is the Horticulture Program Manager at CCE Westchester. She holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cobleskill where she participated in an internship with the Cornell Nutrient Management Spear Program. There, she authored an agronomy fact sheet used to explain common nitrogen sources in fertilizer. Hillary holds a master’s degree in Environmental Science from Pace University where she conducted research on emerging contaminants in wastewater. She has extensive experience with the commercial industry
in both the private and public sectors of Westchester County.

Gardening in a Changing Climate

Speaker: Dr. Matthew Aiello-Lammens

Matt Aiello-Lammens will walk through planning garden plantings in times of unpredictable weather. This can be challenging, especially for the gardener who wants to emphasize native plants in the garden! With a little planning, a garden can be an excellent tool in helping us deal with the many threats to our natural landscapes. Matt will share points in creating a resilient garden. He will explore some high-level issues to consider and provide practical suggestions.

Matt Aiello-Lammens is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies and Science department at Pace University. He has studied anthropogenic impacts on plant communities, risks associated with species declines and factors leading to invasive species spread with an eye toward understanding and protecting northeastern forests. Matt Aiello-Lammens has BA in Physics, a PhD in Ecology and Evolution,
and was a post-doctoral researcher at University of Connecticut.

Recognizing Insect Natural Enemies of Pests

Speaker: Dr. Amara Dunn-Silver

Amara Dunn-Silver asks, “when it comes to insects in your garden, how skilled are you at recognizing friends and foes?” She will introduce you to some common insect natural enemies of pests
that can be found in most gardens. Amara will explain ways we can identify, attract and support insect natural enemies of pests in our gardens, yards, farms, parks and other outdoor spaces. 


Amara Dunn-Silver is a Biocontrol Specialist with the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program. She helps New Yorkers use living things to manage pests. Since 2017 Amara has published Cornell’s Biocontrol Bytes Blog which has a focus on using many types of beneficial organisms to reduce populations of pest organisms, or to maintain them at sufficiently low levels.

Karen Trepp’s garden continually changes from March through November with natural lawns, bulbs, native trees, shrubs and perennials. The repetition of variegated and burgundy leaved
plants give continuity to the front, back and pool. This serene garden provides peace and joy for family and friends - and food and cover for birds, animals and pollinators.

Karen Trepp is an active and experienced gardener CCE Master Gardener Volunteer who has transformed her driveway and yard into a sustainable garden. She has graciously opened her garden
in the past to much praise and acclaim.
